I have practiced general dentistry for 40 years. I do so now with two of my sons, one for nine years the other for eleven years. In that time we very seldom agreed on which crown and bridge lab to use at any given time. One of my sons started testing outsourcing labs finding them inconsistent in their quality… ranging from excellent to not so good, from one day to the next. By happenstance he became acquainted with a group of guys, US citizens, who built and own an outsourcing crown and bridge lab in China. He decided to try their work and loved it. He convinced his brother to try; them and he was delighted. I heard their comments on how good the crowns looked and how they did little or no adjusting to seat them, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger and send a case.

A pessimist, they called me. Finally after a few weeks of their comments I decided I’d send a couple of impressions. Two Weeks later I became a believer. Enough so that I knew that from that day forward, I wanted crowns that fit like those and that has been the case for over a year now. My sons and I are finally happy with the same lab. Yes, there are remakes, but our customers will attest there aren’t many. I repeat, if your crown and bridge work is great and fits like a Swiss watch (Rolex-outsourced), then you don’t need to try our lab. BUT, you may be like I was and find that there is room for improvement. On average I’ve saved over twenty minutes per crown on seats. Our assistants love these crowns because we stay on schedule and they get to leave on time at the end of the day (mostly).

Why did we get in the lab business?

The imported crowns worked so well for us that we knew we definitely wanted to continue doing business with these folks. However, they wanted to do business with labs, not individual dentists.

We weren’t sending enough work to be considered a lab. So we asked several of our local labs if they would handle our outsourcing, but they declined, saying it was too much trouble.

Our only choice was to survey our friends and see if we could generate enough business to be considered a lab. We did. At first we only outsourced. We went to China to check out the labs and found that the ones we had partnered with were outstanding. The facilities were immaculate and we could speak directly with the English speaking manager and owners. In time we found that some things can be efficiently done domestically, if you have the right personnel and equipment.

Consequently, now we have progressed to where we outsource to Asia and Costa Rica for certain things, do domestic-only for others, and some require a combination – the best of both worlds.
